NRN PARTNER: Williamwood Farm

WILLIAMWOOD FARM

Location:
Lockerbie, Dumfries & Galloway
Area Committed:
81 acres

Williamwood Farm is the nearest Northwoods partner to the border, situated in the valley of the River Annan. Pasture fields, hedgerows and woodlands are the key characteristics of the site. The owners have been practicing nature friendly farming for many years – and the local wildlife has benefited significantly from the large wetland, and new woodlands and hedgerows that have been installed. The ambition to boost biodiversity continues to burn bright, with ecosystem recovery given top priority in a significant part of the farm. The site is also an exemplar of sustainable rural enterprise, providing attractive tourism accommodation.

Key rewilding commitments:

  • MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Create new seed islands (with aspen and other broadleaves).
  • MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Install several leaky dams, slowing the flow, and holding more water on the land for longer; explore the creation of a new pond.
  • WILDER RIVERS: Plant riparian tree corridors along the burn; removing non-native Himalayan Balsam from watercourse edges.
  • JOINED UP HABITATS: Plant more new hedgerows - wild fruit and nut corridors - to create wildlife-friendly connections between habitats

'We’ve always believed farming and nature go hand-in-hand. The prolific birdlife at Williamwood is testament to what can be achieved when nature is given an helping hand.'
