Eilean Shona is a captivating gem on the Moidart coast, with hidden bays and sandy beaches, and a boat approach dominated by the imposing Castle Tioram. The landscape is a mosaic of rocky outcrops, mature conifers, heather moorland, and enchanting birch and oak woodland. A Victorian lodge and a handful of renovated cottages scattered across the island provide secluded tourist accommodation.
Key rewilding commitments:
- MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Encourage natural woodland regeneration, including through use of ‘seed islands’; investigate local seed collection and propagation opportunities.
- MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Explore use of timber ‘leaky dams’ to create more standing water and wet flushes.
- JOINED UP HABITATS: Remove redundant stock fencing.
- RETURN MISSING SPECIES: Undertake woodland enrichment planting with missing tree species.
- LET NATURE LEAD: Remove invasive non-native plant species, focussing on rhododendron.
- REINSTATE NATURAL GRAZING: Explore introduction of wild native grazers (highland cattle and ponies).
