NRN PARTNER: Dun Dearg

DUN DEARG

Location:
Roy Bridge, Highland
Area Committed:
99 acres

Dun Dearg is landholding that surrounds a rocky hill of the same name in Lochaber. It overlooks the river Spean and sits in the evening shadow of the famous peaks of the Grey Corries. This site has two distinct vegetation characteristics: heather heath that surrounds the hill, and a plantation of mature commercial conifers to the west. Plans are in hand to remove the conifer woodland and replace it with a multi-aged and multi-species woodland that brings more nature back to the landholding.

Key rewilding commitments:

  • MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Remove conifer plantations and replant the majority of the felled area with native tree species.
  • MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Increase the amount of standing water by exploring opportunities for leaky dams.
  • RETURN MISSING SPECIES:  Undertake enrichment planting of missing tree species across the whole site e.g. Scots pine, oak, aspen, holly, juniper.
  • CREATE REWILDING BUSINESS: Establish the site as a base from which to offer nature-based guiding trips

'We can see the potential that this land has to become so much more abundant in nature. We know there is a lot of hard work to be done but we are determined to do whatever it takes to get life thriving again on this land.'
