NRN PARTNER: Craggie Farm Wood

CRAGGIE FARM WOOD

Location:
Strathnairn, Highland
Area Committed:
330 acres

This conifer and broadleaf wood lies on a conical hill with panoramic views overlooking Moy and Strathnairn. Formerly a forestry plantation, the site contains a diverse mix of native tree species and is notable for an open rocky slope on its northern side and numerous clearings of bog-cotton. Woodland regeneration suffered a set-back in the summer 2023 when a wildfire swept through a significant part of the site. Nature’s recovery is now underway, with birch, rowan and Scots pine seedlings providing a promise of rejuvenated and more resilient woodland.

Key rewilding commitments:

  • MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Explore enrichment planting of native trees species to restore fire-impacted areas of woodland.
  • MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Find opportunities to create more standing water (new ponds / leaky dams).
  • LET NATURE LEAD: Facilitate woodland health by removing sitka saplings.
