NRN PARTNER: Belnaglack Farm

BELNAGLACK FARM

Location:
Glenbuchat, Aberdeenshire

Belnaglack is an old fermtoun in Glenbuchat, on the eastern side of the Cairngorms National Park.  The name means ‘hollow in the hills’ and the site contains a neolithic burnt mound of national importance. While a small part of the farm remains subject to traditional farming, the larger part is now undergoing nature recovery. New woodland along the watercourses above the farm and an impressive Scots pine wood to the west provide glimpses of nature’s potential.

Key rewilding commitments:

  • MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Increase native woodland on site through use of rabbit-proof ‘seed islands’ (planted up with gorse, juniper, aspen, birch and oak and other species)
  • MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Find opportunities to create more standing water on site using ponds, scrapes and leaky dams
  • RETURN MISSING SPECIES:  Reintroduce aspen to the site
  • LET NATURE LEAD: Encourage vegetative succession in the form of scrub development (gorse, juniper)
