ANAGACH WOODS TRUST

Location:
Grantown-on-Spey, Highland
Area Committed:
1000 acres

Bordering the river Spey and traversed by woodland trails, Anagach Woods have a long association with the town of Grantown-on-Spey. Managed by the community since 2002, this stunning Scots Pine woodland provides a special recreational amenity and wildlife experience for both locals and visitors. While the original forest disappeared centuries ago, Scots pines and native broadleaf trees have been regenerating on the site for over 200 years. The woods are interspersed with dry heath, bog-cotton covered peatbogs, lochans and ancient eskers – all of which contribute to the site’s magical character.

Key rewilding commitments:

  • MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Increasing deadwood and improving woodland structure and diversity.
  • MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Creating ponds / building leaky dams to increase standing water - improving wildlife habitat and reducing fire risk.
  • JOINED UP HABITATS: Removing redundant fencing.
  • RETURN MISSING SPECIES: Continue projects to introduce pine hoverfly and twinflower.
  • LET NATURE LEAD: Removal of non-native plant species.
